The Department of Planning, Design, and Development is chiefly responsible for collaborating with community partners, guiding growth, sustaining the natural environment while also designing vibrant and inclusive avenues for citizen enjoyment.

This is an entry-level position responsible for planning and regulatory processes and projects.

Position will be within the Community Planning Program Area of the Long Range & Strategic Planning Division of the Department. Area of focus will be assisting with the development of long range policy plans, including the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan, Place Types and other policy, regulatory and outreach initiatives. The position will help to support the department’s Community Planning Academy .

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and prepare components for planning staff reports related to comprehensive planning, and land development related policies.
  • Review and comment on land development and planning related proposals as well as other proposals involving land use [place types], zoning, community design and land development changes.
  • Prepare information for the public using graphics, maps and written documents on comprehensive planning policies, goals and strategies, land use regulations, community design and other public planning policies and standards.
  • Support a rezoning customer service area team and participate in rezoning pre-submittal meetings and contributing to rezoning case staff analyses.
  • Coordinate public meetings, events and workshops logistics.
  • Embrace continuous learning, training and self-improvement.
  • Some night and weekend work is required.

Job Candidate Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of urban planning and land development principles and practices.
  • Ability to understand urban planning policies and land development regulations and apply to planning projects and processes.
  • Analytical skills applicable to planning and regulatory projects and initiatives.
  • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to use ArcGIS 10.2 and familiarity with the geodatabase data model is required.
  • Excellent public speaking and customer service skills.
  • Ability to collaborate within and outside the department to achieve positive impacts on the community.
  • Ability to perform effectively and efficiently with moderate level of supervision.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Four-Year degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree. A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or Landscape Architecture is preferred.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to use ArcGIS 10.2 and familiarity with the geodatabase data model.
  • Familiarity with PublicInput.com is preferred.
  • One (1) year professional planning experience required. A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or Landscape Architecture, may be substituted for experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four-Year degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to use ArcGIS 10.2 and familiarity with the geodatabase data model.
  • One (1) year professional planning experience required. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for experience.

Salary is dependent on qualifications.
