The Town of Wake Forest seeks an energetic and team-oriented individual for the position of Community Development Director. The current Community Development Director will be retiring effective January 1, 2020.

Located in northern Wake County, Wake Forest is part of the Triangle metropolitan area which includes Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. This area is regularly cited as one of the best places in the nation to raise a family, get an education, do business or retire. While it’s in a growing region, Wake Forest has carefully maintained its small-town charm and unique identity. The Community Development Director organizes, directs and reviews the activities of the Community Development Department, including current and long-range planning programs and enforcement programs. Work involves high level professional planner responsibilities in the formation, installation, modification and improvement of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. Administrative and technical supervision is exercised over professional, inspections, and clerical staff. Duties include consulting with boards and committees on development of the Comprehensive Plan and zoning ordinances; budget preparation; and supervisory functions of employment, training, review of work, performance appraisal and discipline/dismissal. Work requires considerable knowledge of the planning field and local ordinances, and strong public relations skills. Work is supervised by the Town Manager and is evaluated through conferences, reports, and progress on assigned planning projects and efforts.

Hours of work: Monday- Friday, 8:00am- 5:00pm. The Town offers an excellent benefits package.

Job Candidate Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in urban and regional planning, geography, landscape architecture or related field with considerable professional planning experience, including at least five years of supervisory experience. A master’s degree in urban planning or related field is strongly preferred. AICP certification is required.
