The City and County of Durham, North Carolina, operating under a Council/Commission-Manager form of government, seeks a Director of Planning to lead the planning department and work with internal and external stakeholders delivering the community’s vision. Working for two organizations with a shared vision, the Planning Director must be an excellent communicator, collaborator and strategic thinker who will be part of the executive team providing leadership and oversight to carry out the goals of the organization.
About The Department and Position: The Director of Planning works under the direction of the City and County Managers to direct the City-County Planning Department. The Durham City-County Planning Department is the planning agency for the City and County of Durham. The Department works with the community to develop long-range and special area plans containing policies to direct growth. Guided by a joint City/County strategic economic development plan and the City’s Strategic Plan, the department helps to make Durham a great place to live, work, and play by working to create a strong and diverse economy, and thriving and livable neighborhoods. The Director works with seven different boards, committees and commissions to fully collaborate across the City and County with a high degree of citizen engagement. The City-County Planning Department accomplishes its work with 44 dedicated employees and a budget of $3.5M. There is a residency requirement to live within the corporate city limits of Durham within 18 months of appointment to the position. Hiring range is $93,600.00 – $135,000 annually. Job Candidate Qualifications
Education and Experience: Qualified candidates will have a Master’s degree in urban planning, architecture, public administration, business administration or closely related field; over nine years of related experience including progressively responsible public sector management and supervisory experience; and a minimum of 6 years of direct experience in planning. AICP certification is highly preferred.
