The Town of Aberdeen, a growing community located adjacent to Pinehurst and Southern Pines is seeking a dedicated candidate to fill a Planner position. Aberdeen and the surrounding Sandhills region of North Carolina offer an appealing quality of life that provides something for everyone. The successful candidate for this full-time position will help lead the efforts for growth and continued revitalization of Downtown Aberdeen. The employee will perform planning work that provides coordinated guidance and regulation of the growth and development of the Town. Work involves detailed review and analysis of applications for site plan approval, special use permits, certificates of appropriateness, planned developments, landscape plans, map amendments, text amendments, subdivisions and related plans/documents. The Planner will be provided an exciting opportunity to guide and manage the growth of a rapidly expanding Town, which will require above average abilities to build interpersonal relationships, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, exhibit excellent oral and written communications, and a good working knowledge of planning principals to apply to our downtown area and the Town.
This planner is responsible for managing complex projects including short and long range planning activities, grant administration, redevelopment and economic development opportunities, and downtown revitalization. The position will also assess community and downtown development needs, develop plans and programs to address those needs, manage a current Downtown Master Plan effort, assist with coordination of downtown events and festivals, encourage and oversee infrastructure improvements, and maintain an inventory of available commercial properties throughout the town’s jurisdiction. This position will serve as the staff liaison to the Historic Preservation Commission, the Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Committee, and the Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Board. Report submittals and meeting presentations to the Town’s elected body and other agencies can also be expected. Other duties as determined by the Planning Director. Position reports directly to the Planning Director.
Job Candidate Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university, with a preference of major course work in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, political science, public administration, business administration, geography or related field is a minimum requirement. Additional experience in project management, grant administration, and economic or downtown development is highly desirable.
Must possess a valid NC driver’s license and ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend meetings as needed. The successful applicant must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation, and credit check. Hiring range: $39,512 – $45,000, with excellent benefits package including 5% 401-k contribution, LGERS membership, paid medical, dental and life insurance, 12 paid holidays + paid birthday day off, vacation and sick leave, annual longevity payment, and career development opportunities.
