Would you enjoy the challenge of working as a County Planner in a geographic location poised for growth over the coming decades? Catawba County, located in the western piedmont section of North Carolina north of the Charlotte metropolitan area, is recruiting an energetic individual to join our Planning and Parks team. In this versatile position, you will assist in the administration of a wide variety of planning activities. You will have the opportunity to focus upon current planning, permitting, zoning administration, and share responsibilities for special projects.

• Front-line Planner evaluating requests and assisting customers with basic planning needs including questions regarding zoning information and issuing permits
• Administer the Unified Development Ordinance assessing and preparing Zoning Authorization Permits
• Review and approve subdivision plats as Subdivision Review Officer
• Research, formulate and prepare reports in support of existing and proposed plans of growth within the County
• Research, gather and compile data and resources, and collaborate with Planning staff in preparation of Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and Subdivision Review Board reports and presentations
• Presentation to Boards and Committees
• Provide project management on designated plans and special projects
• Complete other essential tasks as assigned

Minimum Salary: $44,332.90

Job Candidate Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Planning and one year of Planning experience; OR
• Master’s degree in Planning

• A valid Driver’s license and a safe driving record
• Clear, concise, and accurate verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff/management, outside agencies and the general public
• Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information
• Self-organized and the ability to logically process and plan tasks/projects accordingly
• Strong computer and technical skills and experience
• Solid working knowledge of principles and practices associated with rural, urban and regional planning
• General knowledge of the principles and practices as they relate to planning and subdivision design
• Creativity; ability to think outside the box
• Capability to work with minimal supervision
• This is considered light work; no lifting over 20 pounds.
• Strong independent judgement and problem-solving abilities

• Certification of Zoning Official
• Certified Floodplain Manager
• Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
• General knowledge associated with landscape design, traditional and neighborhood design (TND) are advantageous.
