Cumberland County is looking for a dynamic, energetic and innovative professional to direct its Planning and Inspections Department. The Department provides long range and current planning as well as inspection services. The Department provides planning services to the unincorporated areas of the County and to eight municipalities in the County.

The Director of Planning and Inspections serves as the leader and administrative manager for the Department. The Director has responsibility for staffing decisions, budget development, execution and managing the operations. The position is appointed by the County Manager and serves at the pleasure of the Manager. This position will direct the development of staff recommendations for consideration of the County Administration, Joint Planning Board and County Commission and represents the County on various committees and in public meetings.

The Planning and Inspections Department provides comprehensive planning and land use regulation for the unincorporated area and eight municipalities, building and code inspection services and transportation planning services for the metropolitan area through the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. The Department has approximately 60 employees who provide professional, technical and administrative support.

Job Candidate Qualifications

The County is looking for a candidate with outstanding leadership, management, analytical and communication skills. Graduation from a college or university with a master’s degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering, community development, or a related field, and seven years of experience in governmental planning with three of those years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

*Professional planning recognition through the American Institute of Certified Planners is preferred.
