The position provides support for the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Charlotte urbanized area. The City of Charlotte is the CRTPO’s lead planning agency and the successful candidate will be a City employee.
This is a mid-level project management position responsible for the successful completion of planning processes and projects. Major areas of responsibility include:
- functioning as a team member or leader on multiple projects;
- coordinating and collaborating with other departments, agencies, consultants and the public;
- researching and preparing reports on complex issues;
- analyzing, interpreting and presenting data, adopted policies and regulations;
- creating maps and graphics for analysis, presentations and meetings;
- leading problem-solving initiatives;
- facilitating meetings and arranging logistics, often outside of regular business hours;
- communicating effectively in writing, and orally;
- assisting in the management of consultant contracts for planning-related services;
- and other duties as assigned.
The position will be responsible for: coordinating the successful implementation of capital projects funded by the CRTPO’s discretionary funding sources (STBG-DA, CMAQ, TAP and Bonus Allocation); monitoring transportation planning projects conducted by local governments using the CRTPO’s Planning (PL) funds; and developing a unified procedure for allocating the discretionary funds. The complexity of the transportation planning process will also result in other duties being assigned to ensure that the CRTPO meets the obligations of its core functions.
The successful candidate must have experience working with local jurisdictions and state and federal agencies, as well as knowledge of state and federal transportation planning principles, regulations, and procedures. The position requires knowledge of transportation planning, particularly as it is administered through MPOs. The candidate must be proficient with computer software, including Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong written and verbal communication skills are important as the position will work with several committees.

Job Candidate Qualifications
Four-year degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in transportation/regional planning or civil/transportation engineering, with a strong preference that it be supplemented by a Master’s Degree. Minimum five (5) years of professional experience in urban planning, transportation planning or engineering. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience. Experience managing multiple projects using federal or state funds is desired. A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a City Driving Permit are required.
