Clemson University’s Department of Public Health Sciences is proud to announce a Regional Community Planner Position which is based in the Clemson Cooperative Extension office in Marion County, South Carolina.
This grant-specific position provides outreach and technical assistance in Marion, Lee, and Hampton counties to facilitate policy, systems, and environmental approaches for preventing obesity. They will work with community decision makers, state and federal agency officials and Clemson staff to access existing community design standards to improve and promote healthy and active lifestyles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assess: Works with agents in Marion, Lee and Hampton counties to assess community health, physical activity and nutrition needs through stakeholder/community network and partnerships; Promotes policy, system and environment change and coordinates related activities and programs in communities as deemed appropriate; Determines the effects of regulatory limitations on projects.
Design/Create: Works with agents in each county to implement research-informed best practices to address identified policies, systems, and environmental factors to enhance walkability; Plans and develops strategies that support healthy food system development and increased physical activity by focusing on accessibility for walking and healthy eating based on community input and goals
Inform/Recommend: Holds and participates in public meetings related to community plans for increasing walkability and healthy food access; Advises planning officials on land use, transportation, and conservation project feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and possible alternatives as related to walkability and healthy food access
Reporting/Evaluation: Engage with stakeholders and lead organized efforts to develop, refine, deliver ,and evaluate research-based community and/or regional programs targeted to key stakeholders; Conducts field investigations, surveys, impact studies or other research in order to compile and analyze data on economic, social, regulatory and physical factors affecting land use; Collects and reports evaluation data as requested.
Communication/Networking: Builds strong partnerships and relationships with relevant local and regional organizations and agencies; works with diverse people, organizations and communities in guiding the needs and opportunities of local and regional constituents; works out of Marion County Extension office and will be required to travel throughout the county, to other counties on the project and to meetings and trainings in and out of state some evenings and weekends, as needed, to meet the technical assistance needs of constituents. Utilizes all forms of communication for identified activities including one-on-one contact, word of mouth, and referrals.

Job Candidate Qualifications:

 

Successful candidates will meet the following requirements: Bachelor’s degree in regional planning, public administration, community development, or other closely related field of study; Master’s degree preferred. One year experience working in urban and regional planning community development organizations or government agencies or other closely related organizations/agencies.
