How would you like to provide leadership and managerial direction for Minnesota’s Office of Research and Innovation? As the Research & Innovation Office Director, you will lead and encourage creation and implementation of innovative practices; and develop, deliver, and provide statewide strategic direction for transportation research investments for Minnesota’s Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Additional responsibilities will include:
• Managing the operations of the Research Services, Library, and Innovation sections of the Office.
• Advising the Commissioner and senior leadership on strategic research investment choices, the need for new research programs, and the progress of current research programs.
• Advising and providing staff support for the Local Road Research Board.
• Representing the Department in international, national, and regional research and innovation organizations and relationships.
• Building and cultivating relationships with research and innovation institutions and organizations to maximize benefits to achieving the MnDOT mission and vision.About MnDOT

Job Candidate Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
To minimally qualify, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Engineering or related field AND three (3) years of managerial experience in the field of transportation planning and program delivery OR two (2) years managerial experience and two (2) years advanced supervisory experience in a major transportation program which includes experience developing and implementing policies and budgets.(NOTE: managerial means those positions accountable for determining, securing, and allocating human, financial, and other resources needed to accomplish objectives.)

  • Technical Expertise: experience which demonstrates a broad understanding of the transportation aspects associated with research, innovation, and policy.
  • Policymaking and Strategic Direction: considerable experience developing and implementing policies, rules, standards and procedures.
  • Human Relations: experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with major stakeholder groups, agencies, institutions, and organizations; demonstrated ability to promote diversity and inclusion through research opportunities.
  • Fiscal Management: experience with large, complex budgets (e.g., multiple revenue streams, grants, revolving funds, legislative appropriations) that demonstrates a broad understanding to ensure effective utilization in accomplishing work with the ability to develop and manage budgets, allocate resources and willingness to implement different effective service delivery models.
