SUMMARY OF DUTIES:   The Senior Planner will perform difficult professional and skilled technical work developing, coordinating and implementing a variety of planning activities and programs, including but not limited to: the preparation of long range land use and transportation plans, including small area and corridor plans; collection, analysis and interpretation of a variety of socio-economic, demographic and other data and information pertaining to the City’s long range planning efforts; review of development proposals, site plans, and subdivision plats for compliance with long range plans and development regulations; drafting ordinance text amendments; conducting research and analysis as required; maintaining census, demographic and development data and disseminating data to interested parties; maintain records and files; preparation and presentation of staff reports to Planning and Zoning Commissions, Board of Adjustment and City Council, along with presentations to citizen and other groups as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Planning Director.

Job Candidate Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning or a related field and 3 to 5 years professional experience in urban planning or community development activities.  Preference may be given to applicants possessing a Master’s degree and/or AICP certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of land use and transportation planning, along with zoning and code enforcement practices; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to prepare budgets and provide fiscal analysis of proposals; ability to read and interpret site plans and architectural designs; ability to gather and interpret technical and statistical information and prepare technical reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local government officials, associates and the general public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  AICP certification preferred
