TITLE: Transportation Planner


HOURS: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM M-F


Approximately 40 hours per week including special projects and some evening

meetings. Some overnight travel may be required.


STATUS: Permanent Full Time


SALARY: Dependent on Skills and Experience



  • Incorporates the JMTE vision through executing and preparing ideas for implementation
  • Prepares RFPs, RFQs, and grants for pursuit by JMTE and its clients
  • Conducts client relationship management of potential and past clients
  • Designs and executes effective public presentations and engagement campaigns to gather feedback from those impacted by projects, or to achieve consensus on project designs
  • Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics such as census information, land use, tax base data, and occupancy rates
  • Research and incorporate applicable zoning and development ordinances into JMTE projects
  • Prepares a wide array of transportation and planning studies including: corridor, parking, bicycle, pedestrian, complete streets, wayfinding, travel demand, forecasting, and feasibility
  • Project management including estimating project time, budgeting, resources, and agency coordination
  • Supervision and oversight of professional, support, and contract staff in accordance with JMTE standard practice and procedures
  • Recommends transportation system improvements or projects, based on economic, population land- use or traffic projections
  • Analyzes and interprets information related to transportation, such as land use policies, environmental impact of projects, or long-range planning needs
  • Evaluates rezoning, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances, and other proposals

Job Candidate Qualifications


  • Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related field and AICP certification
  • Applicant must be able to understand and communicate with government officials, other engineering / planning firms, the general public, attorneys, clients, and vendors
  • Prefer familiarity with transportation government operations at the state and local level
  • Applicant must have polished public speaking and effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment, planning, organizing and prioritizing
  • Ability to use logic, creativity, and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions
  • Understand statistical, algebraic, and geometric knowledge and have the ability to apply such knowledge to solve vaguely defined practical problems
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping the big-picture goals in mind
  • Ability to create graphic designs, development strategies, and render site plans via sketches and / or computer graphics
  • Polished public speaking and effective communication skills (oral, written, and spatial)
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, local government planning concepts, and transportation planning concepts
