As a member of the Comprehensive Planning and Design Team, this position analyzes data and plans, prepares illustrative design graphics, and makes recommendations related to the physical, social and economic development of the community and its neighborhoods; performs complex office-based and field research which includes making site visits; prepares general or detailed design studies; facilitates discussions on plans and development projects; prepares reports for Planning Board consideration; works with other staff, stakeholders and public officials on planning projects; presents reports, analysis, design concepts, and recommendations to citizens and public officials; and may represent the Planning Board and the Planning Department at selected meetings. The Winston-Salem City Council has authorized the minimum salary for this position to be increased to $47,799.94 effective April 8, 2019.
Job Candidate Qualifications
Education and Experience: Master’s degree in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, or related field, including coursework in urban planning, plus strong graphic representation and writing skills. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree with two years of design/planning experience may be considered. Internships and class projects may serve as design/planning experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge of the principles and practice of urban planning; ability to clearly convey planning concepts graphically; ability to develop conceptual site designs and prepare three dimensional renderings; ability to analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical information and to prepare and present reports based on that information; ability to present oral and written information clearly and concisely; ability to use computers and other technology in presentation of information and design concepts; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues and representatives of other public agencies; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
